Historians and some archaeological data date its construction between the IV and V century, when the new capital of the Western Roman Empire, the city of Ravenna, needed appropriate ways of communication and transportation towards Milan and the North-western provinces. In particular, its construction was essential for the connection of the cities of Brescia with Bergamo and Milan, on a road layout that was running at the foot of the hills away from the swamp and wooded areas of the plains.
